White Lies

Last night my two flatmates and I made our way over to Manchester to see White Lies live at the Manchester Apollo. I admit, going to Manchester was my fault (and the gigsandtours.com website) because it didn't show up the Leeds show when I was hastily buying tickets. However, I am really glad we did go over not only to see a great band who are even better live but also to experience the Apollo as a venue. It blows the O2 Academy venues out of the water. An old theatre, the venue is decorated in decadent reds and golds with the most spectacular patterned ceiling (maybe my design theory module based on geometry is getting to me?).

Not only was the venue something unique and special but during the performance the light show going on was also amazing, yet simple. Only white lights were used but contrasted against the darkness of the room each beam lit up the faces of the fans. It reminded me of my History of Art module last year and the electronic art lecture we had and how light shows and lasers were becoming an art form. This show really made me appreciate the skill behind lighting; it needs to fit the music, and be spectacular. The White Lies tech team managed to do this all only using white lights in three positions, the rig at the front of the stage, the panel behind the band and two static lights onstage

  1. I have to say, I am a huge fan of white lies, and I went to see them in Nottingham last month. Their music is simple yet powerful and their lyrics follow the same style.

I was extremely happy to see they brought this distinctive style to their live sure; including the lighting. Subtle, but oh so powerful. I found it hard to keep my attention on the music!
