Urban Outfitters: Martin Maybank Photography

I was in Urban Outfitters today and saw a set of neatly framed almost vintage style photographs on display. that I loved. Turns out it was  a display for Leeds photographer Martin Maybank. It's nice to see large chain stores getting personal and creating a more individual store for each city as well as supporting local talent.

What I particularly liked about these photos is the use of old film cameras to take them and going back to the original techniques that can create such beautiful images rather than relying on the tricks we can all create with a digital camera and Photoshop nowadays. The colouration of the images are fantastic and really emphasis the fact these are real photographs, not digital. I also particularly like the composition, particularly on the fan (I think!) image and construction with the ultra close up shots which highlight the pattern and structure behind the objects. The burnt edges also add to the 35mm photograph look. All of these elements which make the photographs so special add an exclusivity to them. It's nice to see real photography making a comeback, its a style and look you really can't replicate with digital.

  2. Hi, Thanks for blogging my work. Its fantastic to see that my photographs are being noticed. You'd be right in thinking the yellow photograph was of a fan, taken on a holiday to Hong Kong last year.

    Best Wishes, Martin
